What is the School of Critical Arts?

The overall aim of The School of Critical Arts (SCA) is to promote critical approaches to ideas, art, and society in a friendly environment of enquiry, reflection, and debate.

As ever greater stress is placed upon vocational and pragmatic thinking, and as the study of philosophy, art, and culture is marginalised, it is important to preserve the critical aspect of our thinking.

The School of Critical Arts (SCA) offers courses and evening lectures in art, philosophy, and culture & theory. Our focus is on small face-to-face classes, which allows for the critical discussion of ideas, artwork, and culture, as well as paying attention to everyday issues in order to help students to develop their thinking in collaboration with others. We will also encourage students to read, write, make art, and speak publicly as a complement to their theoretical studies.

Our aim is also to provide a space for teachers to craft courses according to their interests as thinkers, researchers, and practitioners. Wherever possible, we intend to promote collaboration between the different disciplinary areas of the school, so, in a friendly atmosphere, students may broaden their interests and knowledge to learn the art of critical approaches. Because we are always looking to expand the topics taught at the school, we also welcome course proposals from new teachers.

The school offers no accreditation, as we emphasise feedback and discussion over assessment. In these ways we aim to help each student challenge and cultivate their ways of thinking, interpreting, and making sense of ideas. Students of all levels are welcome to attend.

The School of Critical Arts is an incorporated not-for-profit association in Perth, Western Australia. We acknowledge the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation, the traditional owners of the land on which the School of Critical Arts is located. We honour and pay our respects to elders past, present, and future.
